Graphics chipmaker Nvidia is reportedly developing a new chip which has an additional ‘core’ on top of the normal design which is built of four ‘cores’.

Exclusively designed for use in mobile phones, the additional core in the new chip, dubbed as Project Kal-El, works in the background and cannot perform the functions of normal cores, said Nvidia.

The additional core is light in weight and operates at low power. It works best when a mobile device is in "active standby" mode, or sitting in your pocket but still receiving information such as e-mails and Twitter updates, said the company.

According to an AP report, Nvidia said that the fifth core is useful for the least power-hungry tasks, such as syncing the phone when not in using it or doing low-impact operations such as reading on the Internet or playing music. The other cores take over when tasks requiring more power are performed, said Nvidia.
