Seemingly the effects of the Gulf War – that mother of all excuses – did not bring all computer manufacturers to their knees – Compaq Computer Corp is boasting net profits for the first quarter of 1991 up 24% on sales up 11% (see Page 5): international revenues were up by 16% and accounted for 59% of total sales; North American revenues increased by 5% with unit shipments up 20%; the appreciation of the US dollar however, if it continues, is expected to have an adverse effect on revenues and earnings, and president Rod Canion warned that the second quarter profits may be down on last year.
