On the big restructuring, Digital Equipment Corp said its objective remains to be profitable from operations by the end of 1994, and it hopes to fund the shake-up without outside borrowing – although DEC borrowed $600m against receivables last week – and perhaps in part through the sale of assets; Robert Palmer confirmed that he is looking at the possibility of striking alliances with companies interested in buying DEC’s excess chip manufacturing capacity, pointing to the agreement under which Advanced Micro Devices Inc Am486 chips will be made by DEC in Scotland as an example of what he has in mind.
