Just to get the mythical 65th bit in the AS/400 straight, IBM explains that the tag bit, there to prevent unauthorised access to objects, is really a virtual bit – it exists in memory and the caches but not in the dataflow – about three years ago, IBM considered adding a 65th bit to the registers, but decided against because it would have made it incompatible with PowerPC.
