Intergraph Corp has unveiled a desktop video production system, the Video Engine 500 System, that enables users to capture, edit and play back video, audio, graphics and animation right on their personal computer. The Huntsville, Alabama company combined its personal workstation, which contains two Intel Corp Pentium processors, with editing software running under Windows NT. The system’s symmetric multiprocessing capability is claimed to boost performance 50% to 70% over a single-processor system. It can run advanced graphics applications and includes Intergraph’s graphics hardware. Video Engine 500 comes with a choice of high-end two- or three-dimensional graphics accelerators. The three-dimensional GLZ and GLI accelerators improve design and rendering, it says. Video Engine 500 uses the Joint Photographic Experts Group compression standard to improve the speed at which animation is recorded. The Video Engine 500 will be available in January in three versions: VE 500 with G91 graphics, costing $19,900; the VE 500z with GLZ graphics at $26,900; and the VE 500i with GLI graphics at $34,900.
