Fujitsu Ltd has released new models in its S – Sun – family of SPARC-based workstations. The S-7/300 model 160 is a high-end model with the world’s fastest uniprocessor, the SPARC64-II developed jointly with HAL Computer Systems Inc, while the mid- range S-4/20H Model 200 contains the 200Mhz hyperSPARC chip developed by Ross Technology Inc. A low-end model, the S-4/5H Model 170 is a new machine boasting a TurboSPARC chip developed by Fujitsu Microelectronics Inc, the US subsidiary. With the inclusion of a 2D/3D graphics accelerator developed by Fujitsu, the AG-10, the latter machine is suitable for Computer-aided design and electronic design. In Japan the three models are priced variously at: 2.75 million yen or $24,340, 1.45 million yen – $12,800 and 950,000 yen, $8,400. Fujitsu anticipates selling around 45,000 units of all its S family workstations over the next two years.
