Laying to rest any muttering that anyone may have heard about the P7 joint project between Intel Corp and Hewlett-Packard Co being behind schedule, Electronic News reports that Hewlett-Packard engineers are already developing workstations around early prototypes of the P7, running various Microsoft Corp applications on them. The news highlights the fact that Hewlett, already able to build basically the same machines for its proprietary HP 3000 and its Unix HP 9000 lines, will also be able to create Vectra personal computer variants of the same machines when the P7 arrives. Hewlett says it has now proven binary compatibility between iAPX-86 and Precision Architecture with more than a million lines of code. Hewlett-Packard confirmed that the work in its labs is ahead of schedule.
