Amdahl Corp is going after Hitachi Ltd Osiris and IBM AIX/ESA users with its new UTS mainframe Unix release, waiving the first year’s licence fee for those that switch to UTS. UTS 4.3 is now XPG4 compliant, enough for conformance to X/Open Co Ltd’s Unix 93 brand, and within striking distance of Spec 1170/Unix 95, which will be reached in a 1996 release. Amdahl, which has no plans to rename its Unix, has two further UTS releases scheduled for this year. Closer interoperability with SunSoft Inc’s Solaris, which it already offers on Sun servers that it takes OEM, is promised. Merging Solaris into UTS was discussed as one option, then dropped, Amdahl says. It will maintain its current Novell Inc Unix System V.4 licence. Prices are the same as for UTS 3.3.
