Schaumberg, Illinois-based Motorola Inc’s multimedia unit has bought a minority stake in Multichannel Communication Sciences Inc to further its efforts in end-to-end broadband technologies. Multichannel also licensed Motorola to distribute products based on its broadband television access control technology in conjunction with the Multimedia Group’s CableComm system product line. Multichannel, based in San Diego, California develops broadband de-scrambling, based on signal processing techniques that simultaneously descramble multiple scrambled television channels at the subscriber location. The technology provides both video and audio scrambling as required by the newly-enacted Telecommunications Act. Unlike existing signal-jamming techniques, it secures the video signal from head-end to subscriber’s home, according to the firm.
