The confusion over IBM Corp’s PowerPC 601 Pegasus machines continues, and now we’re told we were right when we originally said that the symmetric multiprocessing machines will be six-way and then again when we said they would be eight-way: one of our tipsters volunteered that IBM wants them to be eight-ways, it’s just that it’s not sure how efficiently the software will scale; there is also another IBM code name for you to flash about – try Fireball for a four-way symmetric multiprocessing desktop; IBM also expects to cluster rack-mounted Pegasi, possibly linking four eight-way systems together with room left over for extra storage.
