Digital Equipment Corp has snagged Computer Associates International Inc as its third strategic industry partner; they are to collaborate on enterprise solutions. The two companies are understood to have been discussing a technology transfer and CA may pick up some pieces of DEC’s systems management technology under the agreement, which will be announced today in New York. In each of its other two major alliances – with Microsoft Corp and Oracle Corp – DEC moved to phase out one of its major software offerings in favour of an alternative from its partner. CA-Unicenter already runs on DEC Alpha systems, and CA has linked the systems management tools to work with DEC’s Polycenter Manager on NetView implementation of the IBM Corp network management system. IBM’s network environment is being integrated into its Tivoli Systems Inc unit’s Tivoli Management Framework, CA’s closest competitor in the sector.
