NEC Technologies Inc is closing its desktop PC manufacturing plant in Northborough, Massachusetts in order to keep costs down so it can become more competitive, according to a company spokesperson. The plant has a permanent core staff of 200 but also has 300 temporary employees which work on a seasonal basis. NEC’s other US plants are apparently not in danger- the one in McDonough, Georgia makes PC monitors and has about 250 employees and the other in Fife, Washington, makes notebook computers and employs 200. Almost 100% of NEC’s desk and notebook manufacturing capacity is in the US. Layoffs will occur at Northborough over the next six months but a management team will remain at the plant indefinitely.
