Digital Equipment Corp has confirmed that it is talking about selling its Scottish semiconductor plant in South Queensferry to Motorola Inc, but while it is assumed that the plant would continue to make the Alpha processor under contract to DEC, it is not clear what would happen to the agreement under which it has just started making the Am486 for Advanced Micro Devices Inc though the latter says DEC has assured it that any buyer would honour the contract. It is scheduled to be making 500,000 Am486s a quarter at peak next year. DEC declined to discuss details of the talks with Motorola.
