Apple Computer Inc has launched its first 603-based desktop machine, a low-end box aimed specifically, in the US, at schools and colleges (CI No 2,637). Not only has Apple eschewed the new, faster 603E, it has even slowed the chip to run at 75MHz, rather than the part’s nominal 80MHz top speed. But the Power Macintosh 5200/75 LC, as it is called in the US, has a 256Kb level 2 cache fitted to the motherboard to help overcome the 603’s well-known problem in running Apple’s 68000 emulator. In the US the machine comes with 8Mb of RAM, 500Mb disk, double-speed CD and monitor, for $1,700. It is expected that a variant of the machine, probably carrying the Performa label and aimed at the home market, will be announced at the end of the month in Europe.
