India’s telecom company Bharti Enterprises has launched an Android-based tablet computer priced at $220, compared to Apple iPad’s $499.
The launch comes a few days after rival Reliance Communications launched a 7-inch $290 tablet.
Bharti’s Beetel Magiq 7-inch tablet comes with Google’s Android 2.2 software, an 8GB memory expandable to 16 GB, 3G and Wi-Fi, a radio and front-and-rear 2-megapixel camera, according to Relaxnews.
In Indian rupees, the tablet would cost Rs. 9,999, which may pit the device against smartphones.
Beetel Teletech told Relaxnews that Magiq is a "ground-breaking product".
"Our tablet is about affordability," Beetel Teletech chief Vinod Sawhny said.
The new tablet offers high-end features not previously "within the reach of the majority of Indian customers," he added.
