AST Research Inc is shipping to Wal-Mart Stores Inc personal computers costing less than $1,000 including monitors, raising the stakes in the looming battle for the low- end home market, the Wall Street Journal reported. The $997 Advantage! computer is AST’s effort to compete with Network Computers, and uses a 66MHz part thought to be an Am486. Windows95 is pre-loaded.
