Former Microsoft executive Steven VanRoekel has been named as the next chief information officer for the federal government.
The New York Times reported that VanRoekel, 41, will succeed Vivek Kundra.
In 2009, VanRoekel joined the Obama administration as managing director of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).
Prior to that VanRoekel worked for Microsoft for 15 years.
Among his different roles in the tech company included a stint as an assistant to Bill Gates.
The NYT report said that VanRoekel "was a supporter of President Obama, attended the inauguration, and after a conversation with Julius Genachowski, the new chairman of the F.C.C., went to work for him."
VanRoekel has said that he would continue the work started by his predeccessor.
"We’re trying to make sure that the pace of innovation in the private sector can be applied to the model that is government," VanRoekel said.
Earlier this year, US President Barack Obama selected Twitter’s chief Dick Costolo among other Web leaders to join his National Security Telecommunications Advisory Committee.
