The Open Software Foundation is preparing its second tranche of Distributed Computing Environment 1.2 technologies, including public key encryption security, for introduction in the fourth quarter as DCE 1.2.2. Both the DCE 1.2.1 and 1.2.2 releases are being created by the Software Foundation’s Pre-Structured Technology processes. Further out, the Software Foundation is currently looking at using a stripped-down version of the Distributed Computing Environment Remote Procedure Call as a core messaging service because typically, X.400 isn’t being used. The Foundation is also examining queueing mechanisms, including Digital Equipment Corp’s MessageQ. Other Software Foundation work on Java and object technology is expected to find its way into the Distributed Computing Environment over time. The Foundation’s Research Institute already has Java for various architectures (CI No 2,860).
