SunSoft Inc is still on track to have code for the next-generation, non-Unix, object-oriented Spring microkernel with US universities by the autumn, said James Mitchell, vice-president development for the object projects division at SunWorld. Spring’s research and development has reportedly been moved out of Sun Labs and into SunSoft in preparation. Spring will support Solaris via emulation libraries, with Windows application support also due. The kernel pieces are tied together so that defined objects must be used to perform transfers across the system. This is an attempt to prevent kernel hacking. Spring will have a federated naming and uniform finding service enabling users to name almost anything whether a file or not, although it is said to have taken three goes to get it right.
