Following in the wake of MFS Communications Inc, Cable & Wireless Business Networks has announced that it is to begin live transatlantic trials involving Asynchronous Transfer Mode technology this December. Details are sparse, but the service will initially link New York and London, providing a 45Mbps service to three unnamed financial institutions with offices in both cities. Applications are expected to include multimedia communications, as well as new methods of providing existing services. Following the London to New York link, the service will be rolling out to Tokyo and Hong Kong over the coming months, said a company source. MFS began commercial operations of a transatlantic Asynchronous Transfer Mode link in June (CI No 2,435).
