UK-based Amstrad Plc yesterday announced a reorganization of the two operating units of Amstrad Consumer Electronics Ltd, Amstrad Trading and Amstrad Direct. The move will cost involve job cuts in Europe with around 150 job to go in the UK. Amstrad Trading, which focuses on the retail channel, will continue to be based at the head offices in Brentwood, Essex, but the Amstrad Direct direct sales unit for personal computers and facsimile machines will be managed as a new and independent subsidiary of Viglen Ltd. The factory at Shoeburyness will close by May. This re- organization puts Amstrad Trading and Amstrad Direct on a sound footing and on an equal basis to their respective competitors, declared chairman, Alan Sugar.
