IBM Corp has joined forces with the Silicon Systems Inc subsidiary of TDK Corp, the Japanese tape media giant to develop read channel chips that incorporate IBM’s patented (1,7)ML maximum likelihood technology for use in disk drives. The technology uses a proprietary signal processing algorithm and extended partial response signalling to improve the ability to detect electronic signals and thereby increase storage capacities in disk drives. The (1,7)ML technology improves signal detection with any head and media combination to provide optimum channels signal detection tailored tomagnetic response, IBM says. The first Silicon Systems chips will go into IBM storage products but versions for the open market will follow.
