It had widely been assumed that once HaL Computer Systems Inc disappeared into the maw of Fujitsu Ltd, its grandiose plans for 64-bit Sparc-based business systems would disappear with it – but not so: Amdahl Corp yesterday announced that its Amdahl Electronics Manufacturing Services is to provide a complete turnkey manufacturing and distribution service to HaL, building its high-end workstations. No details were immediately available on the new machines, but Amdahl is hoping that the agreement will be the first of many contract manufacturing deals it wins. It is offering full product build, complete system integration and test, and complex assembly techniques such as ball grid array and multichip module manufacture in Sunnyvale and Dublin, Eire.
