Unisys Corp’s hybrid mainframe-class server family – codenamed Clearpath and designed to provide an escape route for users of its smaller mainframes – is set for an early April release. The system combines a CMOS processor implementing the Burroughs A- series or Sperry 1100 mainframe architecture in a symmetric multiprocessing configuration with a Pentium Pro processor (CI No 2,791). The open client-server side runs either Unix or Windows NT on the Pentium Pro. Unisys says we should understand Clearpath – a name that won’t go down to well with Crosscomm Corp, which also uses it – as enabling pieces of applications to be re- engineered and run on different and separate environments.
