Seiko Epson Co, maker of the only NEC Corp PC-9800 series-compatible personal computers, is reorganising its manufacturing focus, totally eliminating manufacturing of CPU boards and personal computer units in the US and in Singapore, and switching to a strategy of OEM procurement from Taiwan manufacturers and assembly in the market where the machines are to be sold. The US factory will be switched to the manufacture of peripherals and to personal computer product development. Seiko Epson’s sales of the NEC-compatible personal computers have been declining and a gradual switch is being made to IBM Japan Ltd’s DOS/V standard. Sales of MS-DOS machines to the US total around 20,000 units per month, while Europe and Asia together account for sales of several thousands units.
