German distributor and manufacturer Escom AG is currently assembling 100 personal computers a day in Brno in the Czech Republic, says sales manager Petr Spinar, and is now exporting production to Escom subsidiaries elsewhere in eastern Europe and Escom Austria. Over the last year, Escom has also been expanding its retail activities in the Czech Republic and Hungary, and the company now has more than 20 outlets in each country, with more in the pipeline. Spinar predicted that Escom’s sales in the Czech Republic would increase to $33m in 1994 from $22m in 1993. Spinar said Escom’s production facility in Brno would supply all its east European outlets; further significant exports to western Europe would depend on customer requirements.
