Asymetrix Corp has released a beta of its Super Cede Virtual Machine to speed up Java execution as much as 50 times, putting Java programs at a rate similar to C++. Asymetrix will pit Super Cede VM, scheduled to ship in July, against Borland International’s AppAccelerator just-in-time compiler.

Lucent Technologies Inc won a $300m contract from its parent – until the thing is spun off – AT&T Corp to supply digital cellular telephones to AT&T Wireless Services: Lucent will supply the AT&T unit with more than 1m digital cellular phones over the two-year contract.

Yeah, we thought, when we saw hysterical headlines citing a Dataquest Inc report saying that cable modem shipments would rise 92% this year – last year 100 were shipped, this year it will be 192, but the figures Dataquest is forecasting are scarcely less trivial than that – it reckons that cable modem ships will be a mere 25,000 this year, and the report actually cautions that other technologies will limit the market, and is even titled Cable Modems – Speed is not Enough.
