One-year-old Beyond Software Inc, Santa Clara, California, plans to release a second version of its EnterpriseWeb product, claiming it will be the first product to gives an Internet browser look and feel to mainframe users. Sterling Software Inc, Redwood Shores, California, has announced similar product, Star:View – due out in September. Star:View allows users access to host-based applications via Web browsers and renders 3270 data streams to HTML code. Beyond Software last year released a VMS version of its software – which allows users to view text, images, video and Java applets stored on mainframes – and will ship an MVS product in the third quarter, citing a 55% annual growth rate in mainframe MIPS, most of which is in the MVS arena. Expect more products and tools from Beyond which combine mainframes and the Internet and Intranets in the coming months. Sterling will also be releasing Star:Gate, a development environment with learning agents and an applet builder to develop and deploy intranet applications, in August 1997.
