CD-ROM drives are spinning ever faster, and Taipei, Taiwan-based Lite-On Technology Corp, which claims to be the world’s fifth-largest computer monitor maker, says it plans to put CD-ROM drives that spin at 16 times standard speed into production by the end of this year. It will also begin making Digital Video Disk drives in the second quarter of next year. Lite-On began mass producing 10 times standard speed drives last month, and has already moved on to 12 times standard speed drives, saying it is on track to make 15,000 of these this month, raising output to 35,000 next month.
