The Ascom Telecommunications Ltd unit of Ascom Data Networks is launching the Ascom Fax Router, a plug and play unit to integrate facsimile traffic into electronic mail and apparently enable local network fax users each to have their own personal fax number. The product works by using the Direct Dialling Inwards information available on EuroISDN. According to the company, the Fax Router automatically passes on the Direct Dialling Inwards information to the local network fax system, routing incoming facsimile messages directly to the recipients’ personal computer or mailbox in the same way that Direct Dialling Inwards phone calls connect directly through a PABX. The company claims that the offering will front-end most fax servers, including those of Intel Corp, Delrina Corp, GammaFax Inc and Castelle Inc. Although the Fax Router utilises the Direct Dialling Inwards features of EuroISDN, an ISDN connection is required only at the fax server, says the company: the person sending the facsimile does not require an ISDN connection and can use an ordinary Group 3 machine from anywhere in the world. The Fax Router lists for #1,200 and will be shipping this month.
