Meantime Compaq Computer Corp has been giving the state of play on its joint venture manufacturing plant in Shenzhen, which it now says will produce 100,000 personal computers in 1995, making it the largest computer plant in China. The local partner is Beijing Stone Group. In November, Compaq also plans to set up a bonded warehouse and customer service centre in Peking where it opened a representative office earlier this year. The Shenzhen plant involves investment of $5m, employing 900 local staff, rising to more than 1,000 next year. Compaq has an office and service centre in Shanghai and plans similar bases in Chengdu, Shenzhen, Xian and Shenyang by year-end.
