Qualcomm Inc says that a committee of the International Telecommunications Union has approved a text that recommends the IS-95 standard (which is based on the San Diego company’s Code Division Multiple Access technology) for use in land mobile wireless communications systems in the US. Called New Recommendations on Digital Cellular Land Mobile Telecommunications Systems, the text was approved by the Radiocommunications Study Group 8, which is responsible for radio-determination, amateur and related satellite services. The next step in the approvals process is for all nations within the Telecommunications Union to be balloted, and Qualcomm says that unless any of these object within the next three months, IS-95 will be adopted as a standard. Qualcomm is hailing the news as further victory in its battle to have CDMA adopted in the US. The Telecommunications Union is now recommending four digital cellu-lar standards: IS-95; Europe’s Groupe Speciale Mobile system; the North American Time Division Multiple Access standard; and the Japanese PDC – Portable Digital Communications – standard.
