The differences between the numbers collected by International Data Corp and Dataquest Inc for personal computer sales for each vendor in the US in the first quarter differ just enough to alter the ranking completely. Dataquest lists Compaq Computer Corp still on top with 715,000 and Packard Bell Electronics Inc at two with 620,000, but it has Apple Computer Inc retaining third place with 415,000, just ahead of IDC’s number three, Hewlett-Packard Co with 405,000, and manages to squeeze IBM Corp in at number five with 345,000, pushing Gateway 2000 Inc, 335,000, down to number six.
