The concept of Centrex, where smaller companies – or big ones in temporary premises – use a virtual PABX on the telephone company’s exchange only arrived in the UK less than a decade ago, and has not caught on big, but Nynex Corp’s Nynex CableComms Ltd UK cable television operator reckons that there is still mileage in the idea: the company now has nine exchanges – from GEC Plessey Telecommunications Ltd and Nokia Oy installed, and is offering a Nynex Centrex service on all of them, going after small businesses with two to five lines and offering round the clock free local calls between sites to multi-site subscribers with three or more Nynex Centrex lines per site; Nynex Centrex costs from UKP10 per line for a one-year contract, falling to UKP9 when you sign up for five years.
