New data from market research firm Nielsen says that though Google’s Android continues to be the most popular smartphone platform in the US, Apple’s iOS has registered significant growth in recent months.

The survey results show that Google’s Android operating system remained at the top, accounting for 38% of smartphone users. However, Android’s adoption by new smartphone buyers has not improved form its 27% in the last few months.

Meanwhile, Apple’s iPhone has climbed seven percentage points, growing steadily from 10% of new users in February to 17% in May.

The study also highlights the growing popularity of smartphones. It found that over half of the new phone buyers (at 55%) opted for a smartphone and that 38% of all US mobile consumers now own smartphones.

Last week, a report from IDC and a new study from Needham analyst Charlie Wolf conclude that Google’s smartphone operating system Android has peaked.

They cited Android’s market share slide from 52.4% at the end of last year to 49.5% March and Apple’s iOS gain of 12.3% for a total of 29.5% in the March quarter.

In the March quarter, Apple’s iPhone also increased its market share from 17.2% to 29.5%.
