One of the few striking properties at what appears to be an enormous yet stunningly dull Comdex is a $1,000 television set from Toshiba Corp designed for the multimedia market. Called the Toshiba Integrated Multimedia Monitor, the device, designed to be used with a personal computer, combines a 181-channel tuner and high-performance FST Black 20 cathode ray tube with direct Video Graphics Array input. It is designed for use with interactive multimedia applications such as CD-ROM, CD-I, and all types of video games. The screen has a dot pitch up to 36% finer than that of conventional televisions to render in sharp detail the dramatic colour graphics of multimedia programs and high-resolution games. There is an optional adaptor for linking it to NuBus Macs. The built-in stereo television tuner is said to offer full television reception capabilities with no compromise in picture or audio quality, and also offers Closed Captioning, and there are Composite and S-video inputs and a remote control that also handles things such as picture sizing; it also includes a built-in 10-watt audio system with high-performance speakers in a new tuned horn structure for better signal separation and enhanced full-frequency performance. It will be available in the US in April.
