SunSoft Inc has agreed with Lotus Development Corp to license the LEL Link, Embed & Launch-to-edit technology that Lotus co-developed with Software Pundits Inc of Burlington, Massachusetts. Sun says it will evaluate the technology for future development efforts with respect to project DOE, Sun’s Distributed Object Environment. Link, Embed & Launch-to-edit provides object linking and embedding functionality equivalent to that of Microsoft Corp’s OLE 1.0, enabling users to create compound documents with data from different Unix applications. Sun already ships the technology as part of Lotus Notes 3.1. The environment, the first release of which is due in early 1995, uses OpenStep technology from NeXT Computer Inc, and it follows Object Management Group standards.
