AT&T Co is joining with Hong Kong Telecommunications Ltd, the Communications Authority of Thailand, the Directorate General of Posts and Telecommunications of Vietnam and Australia’s Telstra International to sponsor the first undersea fibre optic cable system linking Vietnam, Thailand and Hong Kong; the 2,125-mile system will have capacity for the equivalent of 80,000 simultaneous phone conversations, and is set to be activated in December 1995; it is being built by Alcatel Cable SA’s Alcatel Submarcom unit, with 60% of the work, in consortium with Fujitsu Ltd’s Fujitsu Submarine under a contract valued at $128m.
