Gaithersburg, Maryland-based Penril Datability Networks Inc has added a model to its VCX family of modular multiplexers, the VCX500. Based on the Motorola Inc 68360 microprocessor, the product is available in stand-alone or rack-mounted configurations, and provides 16 or 32 high-speed asynchronous ports, with up to four external trunk ports supporting link speeds up to E1. The product can be used as a data PABX, an asynchronous X.25 Packet Assembler and Disassembler, a statistical multiplexer, or any combination of these. Alongside the X.25 support, it is also said to support ISDN using Penril’s DSX2622 Terminal Adapter, and Frame Relay, via X.21, using the company’s VCX601 or VCX604 Frame Relay adaptors. The company plans to enhance the product sometime later this year with the option of Ethernet on two of the external trunk ports. It also plans built-in combined ISDN module and terminal adaptors for both Basic and Primary Rate ISDN. There is no word yet on the availability or pricing.
