Apple Computer Inc has an unhappy New Year in store for up to 2,000 of its employees, sources have told MacWeek. The cuts are thought to be triggered by the need to bring operating costs in line with continuing low margins. The lay-offs are expected to be scattered right across the company, but Apple Americas, the sales and marketing division for the US, Canada, Mexico and Latin America, is expected to be hardest hit, taking up to half the cuts. It may contract its telephone support out to neet the cuts.
