Microsoft Corp is seeking an astonishing $22m in compensation for piracy from that Chinese research institute – as reported, the company claims that the Shenzhen Reflective Materials Institute – the research arm of Shenzhen University counterfeited tens of thousands of holograms used to assure buyers they’re buying an authentic Microsoft product; the trademark infringement claim stems from a 1992 raid on the Institute, when authorities seized fake holograms and moulds used to make them; earlier this year, the court fined the institute just $260 – but China’s hopes to sign the General Agreement on Tariffs & Trade treaty mean Microsoft thinks it can put the pressure on.
