Power Computing Corp plans to capitalize on Apple Computer Inc’s seemingly non-existent portable strategy by launching its first series of notebooks early next year. Round Rock, Texas-based Power Computing has been cagey on the portable issue in the past, but Apple’s recent product recall due to technical difficulties – a few of their Powerbooks actually caught fire – has apparently convinced the clone maker that it’s time to go mobile. Apple will launch its next series of Powerbooks this fall hoping to win back users’ trust (CI No 2,992 ), but analysts say the Cupertino, California firm is at least 18 months behind other vendors in providing features such as CD-ROM drives, large screens and the ability to run on lithium ion batteries. Power Computing was tight-lipped about what its portables would include, but vowed to leapfrog Apple’s upcoming Powerbook technology and features.
