China claims it now ranks 10th in the world in the number of telephones, with a rise of 6.5m urban users over the last 10 years: as of the end of 1993, 2.15% of rural homes and 7% of urban homes had phones, with the figure in Peking at 23%; China has 1,572 domestic direct dial networks as well as 947 international direct dial networks.
