Advanced Micro Devices Inc, Sunnyvale has announced plans for a range of new personal computer processors which it claims will outperform the Intel Corp equivalents. The first of these, due for launch in the third quarter, is designed to compete with Intel’s 33MHz/66MHz 80486DX2, running at 40MHz or 80MHz. In the the fourth quarter, it is expected to follow through with a 40MHz/120MHz 80486 that should show better performance than Intel’s 33MHz/100MHz DX4. And by the middle of next year, the company is expected to launch its K5 processor, which should offer more processing power than Intel’s Pentium. These will be followed in 1996 and 1997 by RISC architecture chips called the K6 and K7 respctively. Compaq Computer Corp has already committed to the new chips.
