The UK’s Cloud Industry Forum (CIF) has welcomed the European Commission’s public consultation on cloud computing.

The CIF was established in 2009 to provide transparency through certification to a Code of Practice for credible online Cloud service providers and to assist end users in determining core information necessary to enable them to adopt these services.

Last week, the European Commission’s cloud computing consultation was launched by EC vice-president for the digital agenda Neelie Kroes. It invites citizens, businesses, public administrations and other stakeholders to give their insights into the use and provision of cloud computing.

Supporting the move, the CIF has said that the consultation should be a priority for governments across the EU.

CIF chairman Andy Burton said, "It is now clear that interest in the cloud computing model is reaching the very highest levels of awareness among our lawmakers, both here in the UK and across Europe"

"CIF has already presented evidence to one of the key select committees in the House of Commons in the UK, and is now preparing to submit evidence as part of this major consultation process," he added.

Kroes said, "We need a well-defined cloud computing strategy to ensure that we make the best use of this potential. The input we are requesting from all interested parties is important to get it right."
