China issued its first set of pre-paid phone cards that can be used nationwide, a set of seven worth from $1.20 to $25: since the end of March this year nearly 400 cities had installed 12,000 magnetic card telephones and issued about 32m cards, but these could be used only in the limited area of the issuing city; by the end of this year over 800 cities will have card phones.
