Cable television companies are both enthusiastic and nervous about the Internet, seeing it as a promise because their broadband networks are much more suited to delivering the kind of all-singing all-dancing material going up now, and a threat because it is going to corner peoples’ viewing time, and cable companies are not exactly the keenest of competitors. But to show their recognition of its importance, CableNet ’95, a joint project of the California Cable Television Association and CableLabs, established a World Wide Web site for the Western Cable Show, featuring about 30 exhibitors, including @Home, Discovery Channel Online and Turner Broadcasting Co, displaying everything from wired and wireless telephony to tele-education.
