AT&T Corp, whose figures came in just below the Wall Street consensus (page seven), says that Global Information Solutions reported a 28% increase in sales of computer products and systems to $850m and that its total turnover grew 19 to $1,820m, but it still managed to make an operating loss of $143m for the quarter, up from a loss of $57m a year ago – increased sales of lower-margin products and strong price competition were key factors in the profit decline, and the company expects sales of higher-margin systems to increase later in the year; elsewhere, AT&T said it added more than 1m cellular phone customers in the year ended March 31 for a total of 4.38m, and first quarter wireless revenues rose 30% to total $652m.

Commenting on its figures (page seven) Electronic Data Systems Corp says new contract signings reached a first-quarter record of $2,650m and that business generated from sources outside parent General Motors Corp grew more than 36% from the year earlier figure, and accounted for more than 67% of its total first quarter turnover.

Revenues for our AViiON server line were flat, both year over year and compared to our first quarter, said Ronald Skates, Data General Corp president and chief executive after the company reported a second quarter loss of $11m (page seven): he said the company will be introducing new AViiON products later this year, which will be an opportunity to round up new customers.

Commenting on the company’s figures (page seven) MCI Communications Corp’s chief financial officer Doug Maine said first quarter net profit rose 31% before a $29m loss on equity investments and a $2m loss at MCI Metro: the vast majority of the $29m was due to Concert; he told Reuter MCI is planning to enter the wireless phone market during the second or third quarter, and may well end up partnering one of the regional Bells – We are in the final stages of negotiation with several of the large well-known wireless operators today, and we will be reselling services based on their network, Maine declared.

Harris Corp, figures, page seven, says it continues to expect strong earnings growth in the fourth quarter and for the year as a whole: strong operating results from the semiconductor, communications and Lanier Worldwide sectors are expected to do more than compensate for lower electronic systems earnings.
