MiniStor Peripherals Corp, San Jose has launched a new family of 2.5 embedded disk drives, claiming up to five times the shock resistance of competing 2.5 drives. The proprietary ImpacSafe technology is claimed to enable the half-height 340Mb two-platter drive and the 510Mb three-platter and 680Mb four-platter full-height drives to withstand up to 100G shocks while operating and up to 150G shocks at rest. The new drives complement MiniStor’s 1.8 offerings: the 2.5 IDE drives are being jointly developed and manufactured with Hitachi Ltd, which signed a technology licence and development agreement with MiniStor in 1993. Transfer rate is from 23M-bits to 39M-bits per second, average seek time is 12mS, the interface transfer rate is 8M-bytes per second. The smaller two sample this quarter with volume next, the big one is one quarter later; the single unit pricing is $500, $600 and $700 respectively.
