Mitsubishi Electric Corp has also teamed up with Lucent Technologies Inc to put together a five-chip digital high-definition television set compatible with what they expect to be the digital standard in the US – but samples of the chips will be available until early 1998. Lucent Technologies will be responsible for developing the initial demodulator and demultiplexer signal separation chips – to be designed at its Bell Laboratories, and Mitsubishi will contribute the audio decoder and display processors. The video decoding chip will be developed jointly by the two. The chip set, which covers all the necessary high-definition television functions, will be used by Mitsubishi in its own planned receiver, as well as being sold by both firms to other television manufacturers.
